On the loss of a friend

A theory is now being discussed about whether our pets will be in Heaven. I have not been convinced, but I do know they are God’s creatures. Anyway - I had my precious protector, Mickey, put to sleep yesterday, November 20, 2007. He would have been 16 years old in a few days.

His liver was no longer functioning and his kidneys were failing. His eyesight was bad, and we suspect he was deaf. He was a beautiful black/tan dachshund/mutt. He used to warn me whenever there was someone approaching the house. He would stand with his teeth bared between me and a stranger whenever I opened the door.

Even at the overweight size of 38 pounds, he was fearless. At the final weight of 18 ½ pounds, he could not even defend himself from the neighborhood pack and rarely went outside.

I posted a picture of Mickey in my March 6, 2006, blog on "Pets." That was in better days, and when he had taken on the role of friend and protector to his new sister, Phoebe.

I know I did the right thing. It was really hard losing a great friend. Mickey is survived by his loving Mamaw, Papaw, and feline sister, Phoebe.
